JOB TITLE: AVID Tutor
Job Summary: AVID Tutors will be trained to tutor with the Socratic method. They will work with small groups of middle school or high school students under the supervision of a teacher in an AVID classroom during the school day. Tutors serve as guides and facilitators of students’ learning through questioning, writing, thinking, and discussing. Tutors’ schedules are worked around their college schedules and can be from 1 hour to 5 hours per day. Days vary depending on location.
Essential Job Functions:
- Takes an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students
- Provide academic support for students in rigorous courses
- Encourage students to enroll in a four-year college or university after high school
- Serve as a role model/mentor for AVID students
- Actively participate in collaborative groups and tutorials
- Facilitate the tutorial learning process and implement AVID methodologies
- Adhere to district/site policies and procedures
- Complete 16 hours of tutor training
- Other related duties as assigned
Essential Job Requirements – Qualifications:
- Be enrolled in a college or university or have a college degree
- Attendance is mandatory at scheduled program trainings
- Ability to effectively communicate with students and other employees
- Ability to perceive students’ needs and develop positive relationships
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to think quickly and show patience
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
